Exhibition Almost Here!

There’s just a few weeks to go before our Behind The Wall exhibition opens at Lancaster City Museum on March 4.

And remember, this will be no ordinary exhibition! In an unusual move, Mirador has attracted some of the country’s most creative minds to bring the Caton Road site’s story to life – from its birth as a carriage and wagon works and its role as an internment camp in World War One to its nine decades as an international fabric printing company.

One of our creative producers, George Harris said: “Thousands of people pass this site on a main thoroughfare into the city every day yet few know anything about its past. Behind The Wall will change all that.”

The featured artwork includes Ghosts in the Machine, a textile exhibit by Michael Brennand-Wood, one of the most innovative international artists in his field, and beautifully crafted panels exploring pattern, time, structure and history created by renowned contemporary textile artist Caroline Bartlett.

There’ll also be a family friendly ‘time machine’ inspired by the Standfast & Barracks clock tower, representing stories and historical scenes in miniature produced by Pennine Lancashire-based Bonker*s & Clutterbucks.

Awardwinning Lancaster photographer, Darren Andrews, has produced distinctive ‘camera-less’ photogram images printed onto fabrics of objects discovered around Standfast and Lancaster-based costume designer, Katie Duxbury has created a colourful multi-layered crinoline reflecting the history and processes at the site.

Young people should particularly enjoy part of the exhibition using Minecraft devised by Adam Clarke, recently shortlisted for the Tate Britain IK Prize. It allows players ‘inside’ the site, to visit warehouses, interact with staff and learn about the fabric printing process, finally creating a frieze of their designs.

A film about the Behind The Wall project, a timeline, displays about the fabric printing processes at the plant and former staff’s memories of working there, are also features of the exhibition which runs until May 1.

Associated events include a lunchtime talk on March 10 and walking tour of the exhibition on April 7 (both at 1pm and free but must be booked in advance on 01524 64637) and a free drop in family workshop with Bonker*s & Clutterbucks on March 25 from 11am-3pm.

So pencil all these events in your diary now and discover what goes on Behind The Wall!
